Make a great first impression in the office 

Earlier this year we gave out our ‘five tips for job hunters’. Now it’s time for the next step. We all know though that after you’ve got the job the real hard work begins. You may have impressed one now it’s time to impress all. You’re no longer a jobseeker now it’s time to be a job keeper. Below are our tips on how to make your next job your best job. 

 

Keep making first impressions. 

You will no doubt encounter many people over the course of your employment. They will be fellow employees, clients, stakeholders, partners and the public. As an employee you need to represent the company in its best light. Never assume you know someone’s importance to the company. Treat everyone as important. 

 

Be a participant and not a bystander. 

Be active at your workplace. Participate in meetings and contribute to workplace culture. Don’t participate for the sake of participation though. Make sure your contributions are worthy. You should know your role and what is required of it.  

 

Spend time with other employees.  

One of the best ways to learn about a workplace is to spend time with the people who are already working there. They can give you the inside knowledge about how to best ingratiate yourself into the new environment.  

 

Ask for help 

You’re not expected to know everything about your job in the first week. Make sure you ask for assistance if a task is unclear. Asking for help is always preferable to having to repeat a task because you didn’t understand it. That’s true for you and your employer. Try and find a workplace mentor as they can provide invaluable advice. 

 

And one last thought…. Be on time, all (or most) of the time. 

Whether you’re working in food or finance, in architecture or advertising, you should be on time, all the time. Nothing is worse than the employee who comes in 15 minutes late while holding a coffee. It shows a lack of respect to your employer or your client and a too casual approach to your job. Both things should be avoided. But of course, if you happen to find yourself stuck in traffic or spilt coffee on your pants, just let someone know- we aren’t superheroes all the time.
